It's Veterans Day today here in the US, and for our neighbors to the north and friends across the pond, as well as in other Commonwealth countries, today is Remembrance Day. (Its observance is more closely matched by our Memorial Day in May.)

Originally observed to recall the end of World War I, as hostilities formally ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, today has since become a day to remember and honor all those who have served and continue to serve in times of war and peace. The poppy has become an emblem of this day thanks to the poem, "In Flanders Fields," written by Canadian soldier John McCrae.
